IT Security Trends - Mainframe Data Security

A Changing Landscape -  Mainframe Data Security in the 21st Century Enterprise

Traditionally, mainframes lived safely in isolation in “glass houses,” making them relatively easy to administer and secure. Typically only a handful of hardwired 3270 terminals were connected, which allowed IT administrators to maintain tight control over access to data stored on the mainframe. But, times have changed.

Today, with mainframe applications shifting to Unix and Linux, large enterprises might have thousands of users accessing data on the mainframe at any given time. And, the growth of the Internet as the world’s fastest growing communications and commerce medium, as well as the emergence of new IP-enabled consumer electronics devices, have placed new demands for immediate 24x7 access to data stored on mainframe systems by ever larger audiences around the globe.
