IT managers have a lot on their plates when it comes to managing enterprise IT security systems. This is particularly true for individuals managing large, heterogeneous enterprise computing environments.
These global systems are complex and geographically dispersed, running hundreds of applications on thousands of servers that do not always work seamlessly together. As a result, securing the vast amounts of sensitive corporate data that constantly traverses these systems and applications each day can challenge even the most experienced IT professional.
It takes dedicated time, energy and resources – very scarce commodities in today’s challenging economic times – to identify and deploy the proper security policies and technologies to establish and maintain IT security in this type of environment.
Making matters worse is the fact that enterprise information demands continue to increase with no end in sight, fueled by Web 2.0 developments, new IT solutions (virtualization, SOA), increasing globalization, and the widespread use of wireless IP-based computing devices. And, all of these factors have the potential to generate new, and often unanticipated, security concerns.
For many organizations, developing and implementing a strategic, comprehensive IT security plan is step one. In addition to the obvious considerations – e.g., IT system/application environment, IT security risks and challenges, compliance requirements – this plan should also include provisions for IT security management capabilities and technologies.
